Artgerm Cover Collection: Mission Accomplished!!!

interview4Like most collectors, I shrug off ‘goals’ and just buy and sell whatever is on my mind at the time. About a year ago, though, I decided I wanted to start and finish a ‘goal’. My intention was to obtain every comic book by my favorite artist, Stanley ‘Artgerm’ Lau, as the cover artist. At the time, there were less than 100 different covers out there (that number now sits at 108) and not very many variants, so I thought, this should be easy……dumb thought.

Trying to complete any set is a daunting task and I needed help. I want to personally thank Khoi Cakes, Shaun Leggitt, Philip Chung, Anthony L, Jon Z, Marq Romero and Inigo Saenz for either finding books for me, sending me links to find books or just giving me a checklist to go by. Completing this is bittersweet, the feeling of accomplishing a goal, but at the same time, not being able to get that rush of finding a new Artgerm book.

I would venture to say that this is the ONLY complete Artgerm set out there (as one of the issues has a print run of 250) … but if you have a complete set as well, please let me know!

I am going to make this a little fun and have a contest. If anyone can guess the answers to all 4 of these I will send you my extra Sketchbook #2 (the Spider-Gwen cover) that you see in the photo, FREE! And because I want someone to win, I will give hints for each question.

  1. What was the FIRST Artgerm book that I obtained? (HINT: it is not an obscure character)
  2. Which Artgerm comic (not a Sketchbook) did I pay the most for? (HINT: it is a variant)
  3. Which Artgerm book is my FAVORITE cover? (HINT: I have more than 1 copy)
  4. Which Artgerm book is my LEAST FAVORITE cover? (HINT: Blue is not my favorite color)

Some other fun facts about the collection:

  1. The hardest to find book that I actually found in the wild was The Theater #1
  2. The hardest to find book that I purchased online was GFT Robyn Hood #1 1:50 Variant

Now I have only 1 goal, which is probably not going to happen anytime soon: get a blank cover, original sketch from Mr. Lau….

Congratulations on completing the set, i’m sure he’ll put out more work to continue collecting. His covers are almost always great. That wonder woman though, underwhelming to say the least.

Congratulations. I have a feeling this set will be more valuable as time goes by. With most of the love going to Hughes and JSC for their portrayal of the female form, it is surprising that Artgerm hasn’t gotten equal praise. His day will come….(I personally think he’s better than the two mentioned due to the fact that he can create an exciting cover without the T and A while also delivering for folks who enjoy that as well)

    My guesses to you questions:
    1. First Artgerm comic: Flash #8
    2. Paid most for: NYCC GI Joe 218 Baroness Virgin Variant
    3. Favorite cover: Batgirl 12
    4. Least favorite cover: Milestone Forever 2

Congrats! An awesome collection from a fantastic artist! I’m not sure if you’re aware but you’re lowkey close to your goal of getting a sketch from the man himself 🙂 He called you out on his official FB page and offered you a sketch! Thought I’d let you know in case you didn’t see!

Your definitely not the only one. I have a 100% complete Artgerm comic collection up to his latest Supergirl #12 release and I have #13 on pre order. I also own all his sketchbooks and all of his art prints. In all honesty, it was one of the more easy artists I have obtained 100% with. Lucio Parrillo is one of the hardest as he has like 3 Warlord of Mars comics that are next to impossible to find. I have been keeping an eye on eBay for over 2 years and havent seen a single copy go up for sale for those 3 issues. Anyways, sorry to be the bearer of bad news in regards to being the only one.
