X-23, Valiant, Prophet & a lot more

Wizard Magazine 148 ( Both Covers ) Release date: 12-24-03

Even if you don’t consider this magazine to be the first appearance of X-23 remember this, it predates the release of issue 3. For me that makes it an instant key even though it’s a magazine.

Wizard Magazine 17 ( Silver Embossed Variant )

Are you looking for hard to find Valiant comic collectibles and you’ve already gotten ahead of the game by hoarding key issues? Here’s one you might have missed. This issue of Wizard Magazine features an early Valiant cover and it’s a variant?!?! Oh yea.

Prophet 4 ( Variant )

Prophet #4 S. Platt Variant

Prophet #4 S. Platt Variant

Before variants were cool, popular artist S. Platt did this Image variant for Prophet. There’s been some talk of a film so now is the time to buy. As far as key Prophet book there just aren’t that many and his first appearance in Youngblood is pretty common.

Star Wars: Book of the Sith, Secrets of the Sith

It’s not too soon for spec on The Force Awakens right? Well it doesn’t matter because this tidbit holds no spoilers. There have been some rumors that Supreme Leader Snoke could be Darth Plaguies. I sure hope this is the case. There aren’t many resources concerning the Sith alchemist and his quest for immortality. This publication below ( though not canon ) contains the journal entries by Plaguies and offers an incredible glimpse into his methodology. For me there is one key point, Plaguies reveals an interesting fact concerning immortality. If one is immortal he/she can enact a plan to take over the galaxy which is free from the restraint of time. This is important especially if has transferred his consciousness to other bodies or used another method to exist as a force ghost ( which he does have knowledge of ). Looking for other evidence?

The book Tarkin is canon and Plagueis is mentioned.

Plagueis is canon even if the Secrets of the Sith and Legacy of Evil are not. This is true because he is referred to in Lucas’s prequel trilogy.

Kylo Ren states that his master is very “ wise “ something Palpatine clearly reveals about the Sith lord and finally the most important clue:

When you see Snoke on film a familiar Williams score plays, the opera music from the scene where Palpatine tells Anakin the legend of Plaguies the Wise!

Geomancer is coming to Supergirl. Here is an affordable first appearance.

Eliza Harmon/Trajectory is coming to the Flash. I haven’t seen much movement on Justice Society of America 1 ( first Jessie Quick ) which in my opinion is a better book but the show is really good and I hope these appearances appreciate over time. Either way there is little risk here.

Other DC weekly format books I dig:

OK this one is a bit obvious but it’s an undervalued first of an important modern female hero!

Prior to Grayson taking over as Batman Dick had to be prepped for the role. Nobody writes Batman quite like Grant Morrision so I recommend this issue for both content and cover.

And finally Bizarro Girl is most likely coming to Supergirl! Here is her first. I love everything about this book except Supergirl’s aged face.

Considering wizard mag to be 1st app is ridiculous

Lol. BTW, who is NYX? Do you mean X-23? Agree with the poster above.

  • Avatar

    Agree with above two.

I knew I would take some heat for this one but there’s X-23’s image in publication and it predates NYX 3. Wizard has some other notable issues. There is no reason why some can’t be considered collectible. The reason I like this is because at the time X-23 was not highly publicized. Unlike Daken and others she wasn’t a manufactured character designed to generate sales. As a result she wasn’t plastered all over publications like this prior to release. Again I’m not saying you have to agree but I have a sneaking suspicion that X-23 fans will want to know about it.

Both the editor and myself missed the typing error. I apologize.

You guys have to remember that this is information being provided to you (that you may have not known before) and it’s not definitive – you can make your own decisions. Could it mean something? Maybe not to you, but to the X-23 completist, possibly.

Thanks Topher. I have no idea how you find this info.

  • Avatar

I understand to the completist it may be important, but in terms of storytelling and actively engaging with the rest of the marvel universe, its a big fat Nah from me !

    • Khoi Cakes

Yea, nothing wrong with that. Again, it’s just more information that you can choose what to do with. But with the way things are now, who knows what people will bite on.

    • Topher

Fair enough, just remember that people collect comics for many reasons, some because the story if great and others because AH! constructed a sick cover. It is for this very reason that I am a firm believer in the idea that a first appearance can happen anywhere; within the narrative, on a cover, via cameo appearance or even on the side of a crackerjack box. No matter what the medium, I want to own the publication that represents the first time something I love can be held in my hand.

Thank you for your efforts Topher! Always look forward to any spec or info you share!

Is there a print run or any other details on Wizard #17?

    Wizard as X-23’s first appearance!?
Whatever… This is the last time I pay to read this site =)

Thanks for the info. Good job guys.

  • Scott Robertson

Wait a minute, Prophet is getting a movie?? This us the first that I heard this news…

    • Topher

      There have been some rumors
on this, Supreme has been mentioned too. I would watch a Prophet movie based on Brandon Graham’s run. The print run on Prophet’s first is way too large but newsstand editions are still quite hard to come by. So for spec purposes I would say the Graham issues, the youngblood issue( newsstand only ) and the one I mentioned above are the ones to hold.

I still have my Wizard 17… And I guess I’m not surprised that Marvel doesn’t play up X-23s past as a teenage prostitute. Good finds Topher.

She prefers the term “adolescent sex worker.”

I don’t know if anyone reads these but Topher I believe your facts are incorrect regarding the NYX/ wizard magazine or I at least need more proof.
The publication date for the Wizard 148 is february 2004 and there is no concrete evidence as to when it was actually released and the actual release date of NYX #3 is 12/2003
Within Wizard magazine 148 there is a short article talking about NYX #4 not NYX #3 to me it seems that if this was really a precursor to NYX 3 why would they spoil the fact that there is a girl with wolverine’s powers.
It just seems fishy to me that you would leave out all of this information. but again prove me wrong since I have no Dog in this fight since I own both publications anyways

    • Topher

It appears that you have your dates confused. Nyx 3 has a date of 2/2004 not 2003 as you say. Also Nyx is NOT revealed to be Wolverine’s clone or daughter in this issue. They only hint at her connections to Logan. The brief article mentions Nyx 4 and uses a cropped pic of her from issue 4. No image of issue 3 was released prior to this publication as far as I know.

I write these articles for fun not to make stuff up so there’s no fishiness sir. I’m pretty sure the screenshots of the issue in question attest to my devotion to research.

I included the ad for issue 148 from Wizard 147 so you could see printed evidence of the release of Wizard 148. To my recollection Wizard was always ahead with their releases. It all sure looks indisputable to me.
