Like a lot of you, one of my favorite current artists is Stanley Lau, AKA: Artgerm (you can check out his cover checklist courtesy of our own amazing Inigo Saenz).
Because there isn’t a huge amount of his work out there, I would suggest picking up any of those books when you see them. That being said, here are a few that you may not realize how low the print runs were.
Of the ‘Big 3’, Artgerm only has published work with DC and Image (and only 2 books total with Image). Everyone is (or should be) aware of Batgirl Vol. 3 #12 (print run 28,011) so I will focus on other books from these publishers.
Lowest Print Run:
Fall Out Toy Works #5: Print run: 3869. Sells for about $2-5. I have never read this series created from the group Fall Out Boy. This cover is all Artgerm, though, and for a couple bucks combined with that print run, you can’t go wrong.
Birds of Prey (Vol. 2) #7: Print run: 33,114. Sells for about $2-4. Yes, Artgerm has done some Bats covers. All have about the same print runs, but this one is my favorite. Again, at this price point, it is a no-brainer.
It is difficult to try and correctly determine the print runs for Zenescope titles so I will not include them in this next category:
Lowest Print Run:
A1 #1: Print run: 3,981. Sells for about $3-4. This is actually one of my personal favorites of his and have never seen it for sale in the wild. This has a microscopic print run and is a #1. I also love the barely noticeable smirk on her face…
My Personal Favorite:
Jem & The Holograms #1 (Comics & Ponies Variant). Print run: unknown. Sells for about $15. This book made Trey’s Top 10 list when it first came out. An absolutely gorgeous use of bright colors has put this at the top of my list for the small publishers. As of this writing, you can still purchase this from the Comics & Ponies website, so there isn’t much price movement at the moment.
Unlike other popular artists, J. Scott Campbell and Adam Hughes just to name a couple, Artgerm has done very few incentive variants. Hopefully this will change in the near future. This is my variant pick:
Flash (Vol. 3) #8 1:10 Variant: Print run: appx. 5397. Sells for $15-20. The Reverse Flash is a hot villain and Lau has captured the bitter rivalry and exact opposites of these two. Although this is not a super rare book, there are very few that have been coming up for auction. Low supply + high demand = ???
Covers drawn by Stanley Lau sales appear to be an anomaly at the moment. Hot artist, generally low print runs but relatively inexpensive sales. Final warning: NOW is the time to buy!
