Rocket Raccoon & Groot Variants

Today I wanted to get into two characters that brought me back into collecting comics. I collected comics when I was in high school and stopped when I went off to college. I picked them up again when Ultimate Spider-Man was released, I really liked how they had modernized the characters from the sixties. I kept going with that series up to about issue 120 and then my collecting mojo went dormant again. Then last year I saw a preview for Guardians of the Galaxy. It was a book I had read when I was still collecting the first time around in high school. It brought back so many memories for me and that nostalgia got me back into this great hobby! What does any of this have to do with cover swipes you ask? Well a few months ago Marvel did a whole set of Rocket and Groot variants for 20 books they released that month. Most of them were homages to classic covers with Rocket and Groot as the subjects. Below are as many examples as I could find.

Amazing Spider-Man #129

Amazing Spider-Man #129

Spider-Woman #2

Spider-Woman #2

This swipe was highlighted in my article from last week…I’m swiping my own article!
AVENGERS #57

Avengers #38

Avengers #38

Another book I have highlighted before. Just a great homage to a very cool cover. Just look at Rocket trying to use an extinguisher on the smoke!

Captain America #14

Captain America #14

Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier #2

Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier #2

Cap and Bucky had real beef…Rocket and Groot were just fighting over the last slice of pizza.

Avengers #4

Avengers #4

Captain America & the Mighty Avengers #1

Captain America & the Mighty Avengers #1

A cover swipe doesn’t get much better than this. Groot in the little window instead of Namor is my favorite!

Guardians of the Galaxy #10

Guardians of the Galaxy #10

Guardians of the Galaxy #21

Guardians of the Galaxy #21

Meh…not the best swipe but at least both subjects have huge guns.

Hulk King Size Special #1

Hulk #8

Hulk #8

Both the original and the swipe are unbelievable covers in their own way.

Iron Man #128

Iron Man #128

Superior Iron Man #1

Superior Iron Man #1

Demon/Groot in a bottle!

Thor #366

Thor #366

Thor #2

Thor #2

What’s more dangerous? Thor-Frog or Thor-Raccoon?

Avengers #223

Avengers #223

Avengers World #15

Avengers World #15

Another great example of what a good swipe is.

Uncanny X-Men #173

Uncanny X-Men #173

All-New X-Men #34

All-New X-Men #34

The black cover on this one either helps or hurts this cover’s art…I haven’t decided yet.

Tales to Astonish #13

Tales to Astonish #13

Legendary Star-Lord #5

Legendary Star-Lord #5

The first appearance of Groot defintely needed to show up in this set

Spider-Woman #1

Spider-Woman #1

Spider-Woman #1

Spider-Woman (2015) #1

I didn’t even realize that was Groot behind Rocket!

Amazing Spider-Man #131

Spider-Verse #1

I guess Groot got his marrying license online.

There were a few more from this series that I just couldn’t place. Please comment if you know any of them! Until next week!
