Suicide Squad Movie Speculation
With multiple stills of the Suicide Squad movie characters being released and most of the cast confirmed (that we know of), it's time to start picking up those Suicide Squad books!
Harley Quinn books have been hot for awhile, because, well Harley Quinn is hot! With bombshell Margot Robbie set to play HQ (and looking good in costume!), I have no doubt her books will continue to flame on. DC got the casting right from a visual standpoint and I'm confident the dialogue and accent will be well played by Robbie.
There are a ton of characters that DC threw into this movie besides HQ, and with me being the more the merrier type when it comes to characters, I have no problem with this. However, DC is going to have to balance some screen time and lines to make this work.
I see this a great opportunity for DC to sneak in and stake claim to the most popular superhero team while Marvel jumbles their X-Men/Fantastic Four/Inhumans fiasco. What we do know is that DC looks to be stepping up to the plate. What we don't know is exactly how much screen time each character will have, who will die, who will live, and who will make it into more movies.
Now let's get to the crime scene . . .
Arkham Asylum will no doubt be featured heavily in the Suicide Squad movie, and already popular due to the TV show Gotham, these two books are becoming increasingly hard to find. A little known fact is that Arkham Asylum was originally named Arkham Hospital, which 1st Appeared in Batman #258. It wasn't until Batman #326 that the name Arkham Asylum was granted.
Who's Who: Definitive Directory of the DC Universe #1 includes the Origin of Arkham Asylum. Flash #117 is the 1st Appearance of Captain Boomerang, set to be played by Jai Courtney. This silver age classic is a must have just for the cover itself.
Killer Kroc has become a popular character in the DC Universe as of late, and has always been a favorite of mine. His Cameo and 1st Full Appearance are in Batman #357 and #358, respectively. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje has been cast as Killer Kroc.
Continuing with the original Killer Kroc storyline are Detective Comics #524 and #525, with the latter featuring a sweet Dick Giordano cover. |
||
King Shark, being played by Raymond Olubawale, had his Cameo is Superboy Vol 3 #0 and 1st Full Appearance in Superboy Vol 3 #9.
Katana is set to be played by Karen Fukuhara, who as an actress, is making her first appearance on screen anywhere. Katana's 1st Appearance is in Brave and the Bold #200, which also has a rare $2.00 Newsstand Price Variant. From my calculations, this variant has about a 1:10 ratio. The Origin of Katana can be found in the two-part story found in Batman and the Outsiders #s 11 and 12. |

Strange Adventures #187 is the 1st Appearance of The Enchantress, set to be played by Cara Delevingne. Jay Hernandez has been cast as El Diablo, and with three different El Diablos over the years, the costume matches up most with the third El Diablo, aka Chato Santana, whose 1st Appearance is in El Diablo Vol 3 #1.
Adam Beach is going to play the character Slipknot, and his 1st Appearance can be found in Fury of Firestorm #28. Jonny Frost, a peculiar edition to the character list and being played by Jim Parrack, had only one appearance in the DC universe. The 1st and only Appearance of Jonny Frost is in the hard cover graphic novel Joker, which came out in 2008.
There is a Grace cast for Suicide Squad. Corina Calderon, the actress cast, doesn't look like Karin Grace (Rick Flagg's mother). I'm going with Grace Choi, who has ties to the Outsiders. 1st Appearance of Grace Choi is in Outsiders Vol 3 #1. Deathstroke was rumored to be in the Suicide Squad movie, but as of now, that is just a rumor as nobody has been cast for the role yet. It still might happen (with a slim chance), but either way New Teen Titans #2 is a Bronze Age key, so if you see it, buy it.

||
Amanda Waller, the leader of the modern Suicide Squad and being played by Viola Davis, 1st Appeared in Legends #1 (which features a sweet Darkseid cover). Legends #3 is the 1st Appearance of the Modern Suicide Squad.
Suicide Squad #1 is the first series titled Suicide Squad and also features the 1st Appearance of the first Jaculi. Suicide Squad #48 is the 1st Appearance of the Joker (played by Jared Leto) and Suicide Squad together and as a bonus, features a Killing Joke flashback.
Suicide Squad Vol 4 #1, a scorching hot book, has the team that most resembles the team in the movie. New Suicide Squad #1 has also been steadily climbing in price and is a great grab if you can find it for cover or less.
Scott Eastwood has been cast for the movie, but no role has been attached yet. Rumors are that he will be playing Steve Trevor, who had his 1st Modern Appearance in Wonder Woman Vol 2 #2. Probably the biggest mystery still surrounding the Suicide Squad movie is what character Common is going to play. My best three guesses are Black Manta, who 1st Appeared in the white hot Silver Age Key Aquaman #35, Bronze Tiger (1st Appearance is Richard Dragon: Kung Fu Fighter #1), or Black Spider, who's 1st Appearance is in Detective Comics #463.
Deadshot, set to be played by Will Smith, has a sort of twisted history. Many sites list Batman #59 as his first appearance. This is not the representation of the character Will Smith is playing. The 1st Appearance of the Deadshot portrayed in the Suicide Squad movie is Detective #474, which features one of the sweetest Detective covers ever, done by Marshall Rogers and Terry Austin. The grail book to get from the Suicide Squad movie is Batman Adventures #12, the 1st Appearance of Harley Quinn. This is the modern DC key to have and if you don't buy one now, it will get out of most collector's price range, and may have already. Margot Robbie will play Harley Quinn. |

As far as my research takes me, the 1st Appearance of Harley Quinn has only been reprinted twice, in the trade paper backs Batman: The Collected Adventures Vol 2 and in the rare 2nd Print (which features a color and name variant) Batman: The Dark Knight Adventures.

BONUS!
For the big spenders in the house, here are five books already worth buying. Detective Comics #27 is the 1st Appearance of Batman, set to be played by Ben Affleck. Good luck. And you will have better luck finding a leprechaun than finding a Batman #1 (1st Appearance of Joker and Catwoman), but if you do find it complete and in high grade, sell your house and buy it. You will get a better ROI. Action #23 is the 1st Appearance of Lex Luthor, who is played by Jesse Eisenberg. Hugo Strange, played by Ike Barinholtz, 1st Appeared in Detective #36. Last, but not least, and still slightly affordable and undervalued is Brave and the Bold #25, the 1st Appearance of the Suicide Squad and Rick Flagg, played by Joel Kinnaman.
- Detective #27 1st App Batman / Commissioner Gordon
- Batman #1 1st App Joker / Catwoman
- Action #23 1st App Lex Luthor
- Detective #36 1st App Hugo Strange
- Brave and the Bold #25 1st App Suicide Squad / Rick Flag
As always, thanks for reading, and yes, I do still believe in heroes!

As a side note, suicide as it is defined, should not be taken lightly and is the 3rd leading cause of teenage death and 10th leading cause of adult death in the US. If anybody is joking or threatening about suicide, they are asking for help. Do not take it lightly. Talk to them or get them to somebody who has experience with identifying and correcting suicidal tendencies.

Great article! You really outdid yourself on this one.
Masterpiece.
Great write-up! And just think, if the movie does well and they make a suicide squad 2, you get to make another lengthy list of all the new characters they will include!
Wow. Great work. Thanks for your efforts.
Spectacular list! Great effort and a great result. Thank you for sharing!
