Uncanny X-Men 136

Can’t believe I’ve been writing this column now for almost two months! Each week I’m reminded why this hobby can become so addicting. There are millions of books out there and more released every week, so something needs to draw the reader to a new book without knowing what the story is about. That’s where the cover art comes in … put something cool on the cover and there’s a better chance your book will be picked up by a reader trying to expand his or her pull list.

The books in my column had such successful covers or stories within that other artists chose to imitate to try and capture some of the magic that made the original book so successful. In the end, each comic is not only a piece of literature but also a piece of art with what is depicted on the cover and the interior pages … a double whammy!

This week … Uncanny X-Men 136!!!

Uncanny X-Men #136

Uncanny X-Men #136

I didn’t realize how many comics paid tribute to this cover until I did some research on it.  This issue was portrayed in the Days of Future Past movie with a much darker ending.  The cover is also very ominous with an inconsolable Cyclops holding the limp body of the love of his life, Jean Grey.

Obnoxio the Clown vs. The X-Men

Obnoxio the Clown vs. The X-Men

When I collected comics as a teenager, my mother bought this for me because she knew how much I loved the X-Men.  I didn’t know it was a cover swipe at the time because the original issue was way too expensive for me.  Guess I was always drawn to swipes!

Crisis on Infinite Earths #7

Crisis on Infinite Earths #7

I don’t know the Crisis story … I could never keep up with all the different versions of Earth that were out there in the DC universe.  Still a cool cover!

Action Force #35

Action Force #35

The UK version of the GI Joe comic released this cover in 1987 during the height of GI Joe’s popularity.  Poor Lady Jaye!

With the new movie deal all Valiant comics have become real valuable again!  I took my kids’ college funds and just bought a bunch of Unity 1’s!!!

Major Bummer #12

The caption for this book is “What the hell is going on here?” … I’m really not sure!

Ninja High School Version 2 #11

Ohhhh … this is Version 2!  I thought it was Version 1!

X-Men - Phoenix: Endsong #4

X-Men: Phoenix – Endsong #4

Poor Cyclops just can’t seem to keep his girlfriends alive.

Witchblade #128

Witchblade #128

Looks like Witchblade caught a bad one.

G.I. Joe #6

G.I. Joe #6

Much like they did with Uncanny X-Men #141, the G.I. Joe crew offered 3 interpretations of the same cover …

G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes #6

G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes #6

… even though this one doesn't look like it without the necessary context.

G.I. Joe: Cobra #6

G.I. Joe: Cobra #6

Not only did they swipe the cover, they also swiped the major event (Civil War).

Radioactive Man #4

Radioactive Man #4

Don't worry, guys, he comes back!!!

Mighty Mouse #4

Mighty Mouse #4

George Pérez doing a parody of his own Crisis cover. The following issue had another Crisis homage cover, in fact, there are a lot of cover homages in this Mighty Mouse run.

Buffy Season 9 #10

Buffy Season 9 #10

Buffy swiping the X-Men makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?

Next week should be a huge anniversary article but I’ll probably come up short as usual … Thanks again for taking the time to read my weekly write ups!
