Invincible

Invincible is one of the most popular characters Image has ever produced and just so happens to be another creation of Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead.  Early issues have held their value which is a true testament to the fanbase.  As of yet there are no plans for a live adaptation but I doubt that will be the case for long.

Here is a list of his key appearances outside of the main title:

Future Shock & Image Comics Summer Special FCBD

The FCBD had large print runs but because most stores stamp them it is tough to find unsullied copies.

This one is a tough find.  Not only does it have an incredible Cho cover but it’s also a Walking Dead key!

Noble Causes 3 / 3b

Noble Causes: Family Secrets #3

Noble Causes: Family Secrets #3

Normally this comic is regarded as Invincible’s first appearance.  There is a variant that features a cover swipe from Uncanny X-Men 141! Invincible does go on to appear in a few more issues of Noble Causes and Dynamo 5 all of which any true fan owns.

Savage Dragon

Invincible 1 is previewed in this issue.  This is one of my favorite Larsen covers!

Brit

Brit is often forgotten by  Kirkman fans which is a shame.  It is a gritty, well crafted title that is worth a read.

Masters of the Universe

Many do not know this but Invincible issue 1 was previewed in the 2002 Masters of the Universe premiere.  Issues 1,1 Gold, 1 Graham Crackers Variant and 2nd print Skeletor cover all feature the preview.  There is a Museum Edition for issue one but to date I do not know if the preview is included.

The Pact 1-4

Early on Invincible was often used in conjunction with characters like Firebreather (see Noble Causes). As Firebreather flamed out Invincible proved to be the more popular original Image creation.

Tech Jacket

If you haven’t read Tech Jacket I suggest you take a look.  It is an excellent mini from Image’s most prolific writer.  This comic is sometimes credited as being Invincible’s first appearance.

Previews: Diamond

It just so happens that Invincible was given the cover treatment for this well known industry publication. It is only a catalog  but remains an Invincible collectible.

Marvel Team-Up 14

What’s not to like about this gem? It’s a truly dynamic cover featuring two of the greatest heroes ever to appear in comics.  To date I believe it is the only time Invincible appears in a Marvel publication.

So what is Invincible's true first appearance?

I would have to agree with the grading community and say that Noble Causes 3,3b are his first comic appearances.  Beyond that I think there were enough comics that previewed the first issue that it would end up coming down to release date.

Good info and thanks for posting! Kirkman is gold these days and Invincible seems to be somewhat neglected. Interesting comments on first appearance. I see these as his earliest: Savage Dragon #102 (Aug 2002), Tech Jacket #1 (Nov 2002), Noble Causes Family Secrets #3 (Dec 2002). Would like to hear more on what leads you to stick with the Noble Causes appearance as first? Thanks!

Actually other than CGC labeling it as his first appearance. If SD 102 was published earlier then I would go with that book. Others might disagree as it is a preview and continuity wise Noble causes may hold his first appearance in story.

Hi! I know this article is old and I’m not even sure you’ll see this post but since the Invincible movie news came out last week, I’ve been trying to find out a definitive answer to Invincible’s first appearance. I know I’m not likely to get one but I tend to agree (with my very very amateur and limited speculating experience) with your (and CGC’s) reasoning. My questions are, if I may: (i) would CGC ever change its mind given it already labels Noble Causes 3 as the first appearance (and has that happened before with a first appearance)? and (ii) since your article, have you noticed collectors/speculators trending one way over the other when it comes to in-comic preview pages first appearance and a continuity one? (I’ve got a copy of Noble Causes 3 and am thinking about sending it to CGC.)

Thank you and CBSI for all the wonderful content and info!
