Invincible is one of the most popular characters Image has ever produced and just so happens to be another creation of Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead. Early issues have held their value which is a true testament to the fanbase. As of yet there are no plans for a live adaptation but I doubt that will be the case for long.
Here is a list of his key appearances outside of the main title:
Future Shock & Image Comics Summer Special FCBD
The FCBD had large print runs but because most stores stamp them it is tough to find unsullied copies.
Image Holiday Special 2005
This one is a tough find. Not only does it have an incredible Cho cover but it’s also a Walking Dead key!
Noble Causes 3 / 3b
Normally this comic is regarded as Invincible’s first appearance. There is a variant that features a cover swipe from Uncanny X-Men 141! Invincible does go on to appear in a few more issues of Noble Causes and Dynamo 5 all of which any true fan owns.
Invincible 1 is previewed in this issue. This is one of my favorite Larsen covers!
Invincible makes other appearances in these Savage Dragon issues:
Brit is often forgotten by Kirkman fans which is a shame. It is a gritty, well crafted title that is worth a read.
Masters of the Universe
Many do not know this but Invincible issue 1 was previewed in the 2002 Masters of the Universe premiere. Issues 1,1 Gold, 1 Graham Crackers Variant and 2nd print Skeletor cover all feature the preview. There is a Museum Edition for issue one but to date I do not know if the preview is included.
The Pact 1-4
Early on Invincible was often used in conjunction with characters like Firebreather (see Noble Causes). As Firebreather flamed out Invincible proved to be the more popular original Image creation.
If you haven’t read Tech Jacket I suggest you take a look. It is an excellent mini from Image’s most prolific writer. This comic is sometimes credited as being Invincible’s first appearance.
It just so happens that Invincible was given the cover treatment for this well known industry publication. It is only a catalog but remains an Invincible collectible.
Marvel Team-Up 14
What’s not to like about this gem? It’s a truly dynamic cover featuring two of the greatest heroes ever to appear in comics. To date I believe it is the only time Invincible appears in a Marvel publication.
So what is Invincible's true first appearance?
I would have to agree with the grading community and say that Noble Causes 3,3b are his first comic appearances. Beyond that I think there were enough comics that previewed the first issue that it would end up coming down to release date.
