Daredevil #168 (Marvel, 1981)

WRITER: Frank Miller
ARTIST: Frank Miller

We have Kingpin.  We have Turk Barrett and Gladiator.  There’s Foggy, Karen, Claire and Stick, and more minor characters than you can shake a billy-club at.  So, where is Matt Murdock’s college squeeze?  Where’s Kingpin’s greatest assassin?  Where’s Elektra, damn it?  New casting info is coming at a furious rate for Netflix’s Daredevil, due out April 10, and still no word who will play Elektra.  The good news, then, is that there’s still time to pick up her first appearance in Daredevil #168.  This book is already a heater – Very Fine copies are in the $150 range, but those prices are sure to rise once it is confirmed she’ll be joining the party.

2 The Sandman #22 (DC, 1991)

WRITER: Neil Gaiman
ARTIST: Kelley Jones

No denying it – film and television are the fuel that feed the speculation fire.  Last September, it was announced that a project was in development based on Mike Carey’s 75-issue series, Lucifer (itself based on the character created by Neil Gaiman in The Sandman). Earlier this month, it was announced that hottie Lina Esco was being cast as the demon Mazikeen, or “Maze,” who, in the books, is Lucifer’s paramour and right hand.  Mazikeen’s first appearance is in The Sandman #22.  Near Mint copies can still be found on eBay for $20-ish, but won’t be there for long!

3 Avengers #123 (Marvel, 1974)

WRITER: Steve Englehart
ARTIST: William “Bob” Brown

Last week, we talked about that super-team jumping, former hooker Mantis and the strong possibility of her showing up in either future Avengers movies, Guardians of the Galaxy films, or both.  Well, if there’s value in her first appearance, logic dictates that her origin story must hold worth as well.  Avengers #123 is that book, and Near Mint copies are pulling in $20 minimum right now.

4 Power Man #48 (Marvel, 1977)

WRITER: Chris Claremont
ARTIST: John Byrne

Most folks know that Netflix has not one but four superhero shows on the slate for release.  As mentioned above, Daredevil is due out in a few weeks.  That leaves A.K.A. Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, all in the latter stages of development and all supposedly due out in 2015.  At some point, without a doubt, there has to be crossover between shows, especially with Luke Cage and Iron Fist.  Their first meeting, in Power Man #48, is going to be desirable as both of these shows get closer to release.  Power Man #48 is a $20+ book in decent condition now and is definitely a good one to buy and put away for a rainy day.

5 Marvel Tales #98 (1978)

WRITER: Gerry Conway
ARTIST: Gil Kane
Reprint of ASM 121

We’ve already established that there can be some decent money to be made with reprints.  Marvel Tales #98 is a great one for that.  With Very Fine copies of Amazing Spider-Man #121 pulling down more than $300 now, it’s little wonder that folks have turned to Marvel Tales #98 as a nice way to own the art and story of Gwen’s death without having to sell their kids into slavery (which I do not recommend – it is very hard to get them back again).  Decent copies of Marvel Tales can be had for $10-$15 and are great as keepers or a quick flip.
